Founder

James Merkin

James Merkin is a technology industry veteran. He has deep experience working with companies of all sizes,  in both technical and strategic business roles.  He is an entrepreneur himself, having started a leading-edge electronic music production company early in his career.

James was Director of Technology for Clinton Housing Development Company – a non-profit of 100 in Midtown Manhattan – from 2014 to 2017. He planned and oversaw a complete infrastructure overhaul including cloud-based email, WAN, VOIP, web-based applications and managed printing.

For several years before that, James consulted primarily with startup companies, providing strategic advice. James managed the sale of data warehouse vendor DQS' Patent portfolio.  Proposals he wrote for  Biosense Technologies brought in over $3 million dollars in Small Business Innovation Research grants.

Software vendor BroadVision recruited him in 1998 and he participated in the first internet boom.  He was one of their top Sales Engineers and was promoted to Product Manager for their Finance web application before moving into consulting in 2001.

His Financial industry experience includes a long-term engagement at Smith Barney, where he was a member of the group that built their original Data Warehouse, and as Senior Technical Consultant led the team that implemented their first intranet project. He was also a Lead Consultant for John Hancock Insurance in Boston, designing and building their Asset Data Warehouse.

In his first programming contract – at Bell Labs in 1992, he wrote C and assembly code, controlling precision motors in 3 dimensions for a PC-based fiber-optic splicing machine.

Earlier in his career, James co-founded Syntone, Boston’s first computer-based music production company. Using the Synclavier, Syntone produced TV commercials and worked on records by the Cars, Malcolm McLaren and others.

He attended New England Conservatory of Music and Columbia University. In 2013 he completed an online course – with honors – in Startup Engineering from Stanford University.
